Microsoft Layoffs: Microsoft has announced another round of global layoffs, eliminating 4,800 positions across the company as part of a broader effort to streamline operations. The latest workforce reduction includes a significant number of employees from the Xbox gaming division, which is undergoing a major business restructuring.
According to the company, around 1,600 Xbox employees are affected in the current phase, with additional job cuts expected during the ongoing financial year. The restructuring is aimed at improving the long term performance of the gaming business amid increasing competition and changing market conditions.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the gaming division has not achieved the growth the company had anticipated despite making major investments over the past few years. She noted that the business continues to operate with lower profit margins compared to other leading gaming platforms and publishers.
Microsoft also cited rising hardware costs and growing challenges in the gaming industry as key reasons behind the reorganization. The company plans to separate four game development studios that were previously acquired as part of its gaming expansion strategy.
The restructuring comes nearly three years after Microsoft completed its multibillion dollar acquisition of Activision Blizzard to strengthen its gaming portfolio and subscription services. While the acquisition added valuable franchises, company executives acknowledged that overall business growth has fallen short of expectations.
The Xbox layoffs are part of a wider restructuring across Microsoft. Company officials clarified that the eliminated positions are not being replaced by artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, Microsoft also introduced voluntary retirement programs, with a significant number of eligible employees choosing to participate.
Microsoft said the latest changes are intended to align the company with evolving customer demands while building a stronger and more sustainable business for the future.
