Telangana Introduces Smart QR Code Ration Cards, Distribution to Begin Soon

The Telangana government has completed printing new smart ration cards with QR codes and plans to distribute them soon, benefiting more than 1.05 crore families across the state.

The Telangana government has completed preparations to roll out new smart ration cards featuring QR code technology, with distribution expected to begin soon after the final approval from Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.

The newly designed cards have already been dispatched to districts across the state. Officials are waiting for the Chief Minister to announce the official launch date before handing them over to beneficiaries.

More than 1,05,42,188 ration cards have been prepared for distribution, covering over 3,39,96,239 beneficiaries across Telangana. The initiative aims to simplify the public distribution system and improve access to essential commodities.

Unlike the existing paper based ration cards, the new version has been printed in a credit card sized smart format with an embedded QR code. The card displays the cardholder’s name and address, making it more durable and convenient for daily use.

Scanning the QR code will allow beneficiaries to view family member details along with records of previously collected ration items such as rice, wheat and sugar. This digital feature is expected to improve transparency and make verification easier.

At fair price shops, beneficiaries can either scan the QR code or simply provide the ration card number to receive supplies. Any family member whose name appears on the card can collect ration using biometric authentication.

The government has also advised beneficiaries to download the T Ration mobile application, link their ration card through OTP verification and create an MPIN for easier access to digital services related to the public distribution system.

Officials said the Civil Supplies Department will bear the entire cost of printing the smart ration cards, ensuring that beneficiaries will not have to pay any additional charges for receiving the new cards.
