GMR Airports has assumed operations of Nagpur International Airport marking a major expansion that aims to transform the city into a leading aviation cargo and commercial hub.

GMR Takes Over Nagpur Airport: GMR Airports has officially taken over the operations of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, adding another major milestone to its growing aviation portfolio. The company announced that it assumed full operational responsibility for the airport from June 25 2026.
With the addition of Nagpur, GMR Airports now manages or is developing a total of nine airports across India and international markets. The expansion further strengthens the company’s position as one of the leading airport infrastructure operators in the aviation sector.
Nagpur holds strategic importance because of its central location in India, making it an ideal destination for aviation logistics, cargo movement and passenger connectivity. Under a thirty year concession agreement, GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited will modernize the airport in multiple phases with world class infrastructure and improved passenger facilities.
GMR Airports Chairman GBS Raju said the first phase of development will increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to three million through the expansion of a new passenger terminal. Future development plans aim to raise the airport’s capacity to thirty million passengers every year. The project also includes a modern air traffic control tower upgraded runway infrastructure and a cargo terminal capable of handling twenty thousand metric tonnes annually.
Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu welcomed the development and said the project aligns with the Government of India’s regional connectivity goals under the UDAN scheme. He expressed confidence that Nagpur will emerge as a major domestic and international transfer hub while boosting cargo movement maintenance repair and overhaul services and creating new employment opportunities across Central India.
