E20 Petrol Alert for Older Vehicles as E10 Compatible Engines May Face Component Damage
The expansion of E20 petrol across India supports cleaner fuel goals, but experts caution that older E10 compatible vehicles could experience engine and fuel system wear with prolonged use.
E20 Petrol Raises Concerns for Older Vehicles
India is rapidly expanding the use of ethanol blended petrol to reduce pollution and cut fuel imports. While the shift to E20 petrol is a major step towards cleaner transportation, it has also raised concerns among owners of older vehicles that were designed only for E10 fuel.
According to reports from the automobile sector, continuous use of E20 petrol in vehicles built exclusively for E10 may increase the risk of wear and damage to certain engine and fuel system components over time.
Test Results Show Mixed Outcomes
Engine durability studies conducted by passenger vehicle manufacturers produced different results. One original equipment manufacturer completed a 400 hour endurance test without reporting any major issues, and the engine performance with E20 fuel remained within acceptable limits.
However, another manufacturer observed a thermomechanical failure in the exhaust valve after an engine was tested for a total of 809 hours. The findings suggest that long term compatibility can vary depending on engine design and manufacturing specifications.
ARAI Study Highlights Important Findings
A durability assessment by the Automotive Research Association of India also evaluated four wheelers running on E20 fuel. The study found that a Bharat Stage IV engine delivered acceptable performance with E20 petrol.
At the same time, the report noted that a Bharat Stage VI turbocharged engine developed issues after 265 hours of endurance testing, indicating that some engine configurations may require additional evaluation before prolonged use of higher ethanol blends.
Vehicle Owners Should Follow Manufacturer Guidance
Experts advise vehicle owners to check the fuel compatibility mentioned in their owner’s manual before filling E20 petrol. Using the recommended fuel grade helps maintain engine performance and reduces the possibility of long term mechanical damage.
As E20 petrol becomes more widely available across the country, motorists should rely on manufacturer recommendations to ensure their vehicles remain safe, efficient, and reliable.
