Bihar Born Kanishka Narayan Takes Charge as Britain’s New AI Minister

Kanishka Narayan, who was born in Bihar, India, has been appointed as the United Kingdom’s new Artificial Intelligence Minister, marking a significant milestone in his political journey. Just two years after entering Parliament, he has secured one of the most influential technology related positions in the British government, reflecting the growing importance of AI in shaping the country’s future.

His appointment comes at a time when governments across the world are racing to strengthen their artificial intelligence capabilities. As AI becomes central to economic growth, innovation, and national competitiveness, Narayan will play a key role in guiding Britain’s technology policies and long term AI strategy.

Following the announcement, Narayan highlighted the importance of the moment in a message shared on social media. He said countries have only a limited window to decide whether they will shape artificial intelligence or simply be shaped by it. The appointment follows a major cabinet reshuffle under the UK’s new Prime Minister Andy Burnham. As part of the restructuring, the standalone Department for Science Innovation and Technology was merged into a broader government framework. Narayan’s responsibilities will now span both the Cabinet Office and the Department for Business Innovation Science and Trade, placing him at the heart of Britain’s technology agenda.

Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, in November 1989, Narayan spent his early childhood in India before his family moved to Delhi. At the age of 12, they relocated to Cardiff in Wales, where he grew up. He has often spoken about the financial challenges his parents faced after moving to the United Kingdom, including working minimum wage and night shift jobs. Those experiences, he says, shaped his belief in equal opportunities and social mobility.

Narayan’s academic journey has been equally impressive. After attending a government school in Cardiff, he earned a scholarship to the prestigious Eton College. He later studied Philosophy Politics and Economics at Balliol College Oxford before completing his MBA at Stanford University in the United States.

Before entering politics, Narayan built an extensive career across finance, venture capital, and public policy. He worked at investment bank Lazard, advising corporate boards, government finance ministries, and technology entrepreneurs across Europe and the United States. His work focused on sectors including artificial intelligence, financial technology, and climate innovation.

He later joined venture capital firms Atomico and Clocktower Ventures, where he worked closely with technology startups and investment teams across Europe. His experience in the startup ecosystem gave him valuable insights into emerging technologies and digital innovation.

Narayan also served as an economist and senior adviser within the UK government, collaborating with cabinet ministers and the Prime Minister’s Office on major policy initiatives. During this period, he contributed to the drafting of the United Kingdom’s 25 year environmental plan while also working on broader economic and innovation policies.

With a unique blend of international education, experience in finance and venture capital, and a strong background in public policy, Kanishka Narayan is now expected to lead Britain’s efforts in artificial intelligence. His appointment reflects the UK’s growing focus on emerging technologies and its ambition to remain a global leader in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
