Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns Before Completing His Term

Bangladesh has entered a constitutional transition after President Mohammed Shahabuddin submitted his resignation, ending his tenure before the completion of his five year term. Officials confirmed that the resignation process has been initiated under the country’s constitutional framework.

The 76 year old leader cited ongoing health issues as the primary reason for stepping down. He said persistent medical complications had made it difficult for him to continue in office.

According to officials, the resignation letter was sent to Parliament, where Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed is expected to assume the responsibilities of Acting President until the election of a new head of state is completed.

Shahabuddin assumed office in April 2023 after being elected by the previous Parliament. A veteran of Bangladesh’s Liberation War and a former judge, he remained in the constitutional post during a politically turbulent period following the student led protests that reshaped the country’s political landscape.

His resignation comes amid continued political developments in Bangladesh, where leadership changes have followed the events that led to the departure of the previous Awami League government. Authorities are expected to begin the formal process for electing the country’s next President in accordance with constitutional provisions.
