Lava Shark 2 5G First Impressions: Budget 5G Phone With Big Battery and Mixed Performance

Lava has expanded its Shark smartphone series in India with the launch of the Shark 2 5G. The company had introduced the Shark 4G earlier in March and later announced the Shark 5G in May. With the new model, Lava is aiming to strengthen its presence in the sub Rs 15,000 smartphone segment, where brands like Xiaomi and Poco already have a strong customer base.

We spent a couple of days using the Lava Shark 2 5G to understand whether it can create a place for itself among the many affordable 5G smartphones available in the market. Here are our initial impressions of the device.

The Lava Shark 2 5G comes in a single configuration featuring 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. Users can expand storage up to 1TB through a microSD card. The smartphone has been launched at Rs 11,999 and is available in Sonar Gold and Arya Blue colour options. The device is currently being sold through offline retail stores across India.

Like other Lava smartphones, the Shark 2 5G also comes with the company’s free doorstep service program, which aims to provide easier after-sales support for customers.

The Arya Blue variant that we received for review offers a slightly different appearance compared to regular budget smartphones. Instead of a plain blue rear panel, Lava has added a textured finish that gives the phone a more modern look. The glossy back panel catches attention, while the square-shaped camera module with circular ring elements adds a distinctive design touch.

The rear camera section carries branding for the 13 megapixel AI camera and 5G connectivity, along with an LED flash. The Lava logo is placed on the lower left side of the back panel. The phone feels slightly heavy in hand and does not fall into the slim smartphone category. It measures 167.35mm in height, 77.37mm in width, and 8.5mm in thickness, while weighing around 200 grams.

The overall design feels suitable for its price segment. The power button and volume controls are placed on the right side, while the SIM tray is positioned on the left side.

For display, the Lava Shark 2 5G features a large 6.75 inch HD Plus touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen offers decent brightness, making outdoor visibility comfortable in normal conditions. During initial usage, the display delivered acceptable sharpness for daily activities such as browsing and watching videos.

However, when tested with different video content, the viewing experience appeared average. Colour reproduction and overall clarity are satisfactory for the price but do not stand out compared to some competing devices in the same category.

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by an octa core Unisoc T8200 processor paired with 4GB RAM. It runs on Android 16 and is designed to offer 5G support along with everyday performance capabilities.

During early testing, the phone handled multiple apps running together without major issues. Regular tasks such as social media browsing, calling, and basic multitasking worked smoothly. A detailed performance test will reveal how the device performs during extended gaming and heavy usage scenarios.

The camera setup on the Lava Shark 2 5G includes a 13 megapixel autofocus primary rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera for selfies and video calls. The front camera also supports autofocus, which is not commonly seen in this price segment.

In everyday usage, the camera performance was average. The selfie camera works well for video calls, while photographs taken in good lighting conditions show natural colours. The phone is not targeted at users looking for a camera focused experience, but it can handle basic photography needs.

Low light photography remains an area where improvements are needed. Images captured indoors or in darker environments showed noticeable noise and lacked fine details. Daylight shots performed better, but the overall camera experience remains average at this stage.

One of the strongest features of the Lava Shark 2 5G is its battery capacity. The smartphone packs a large 6000mAh battery with support for 18W charging. During initial use involving social media, calls, and regular daily tasks, the phone easily lasted around one and a half days.

However, the charging experience could have been better. The bundled 10W charging adapter feels outdated considering the competition in the sub Rs 12,000 segment. A faster charging solution would have improved the overall user experience, especially with such a large battery.

The budget smartphone segment under Rs 15,000 has become highly competitive, with several brands offering feature packed devices. The Lava Shark 2 5G brings some appealing features such as a large battery, 120Hz display, and affordable 5G support, but there are areas where it still needs improvement.

After the initial usage period, the phone appears to offer good value for users looking for a simple 5G smartphone with long battery life. However, factors like camera quality, charging speed, and long term performance will decide whether the Lava Shark 2 5G can truly stand out in this crowded segment.

A detailed review after extended testing will provide a clearer picture of whether Lava’s latest Shark series smartphone can compete effectively with established rivals.
