Astronomers Discover Rare Sugar Molecule in Deep Space, Offering New Clues About the Origins of Life
Scientists have identified a complex sugar molecule in the interstellar medium, strengthening research into how essential ingredients for life may have formed and spread across the galaxy.

A team of astronomers has identified a complex sugar molecule drifting through the vast space between stars, adding another important piece to the puzzle of how the basic ingredients for life may have emerged in the universe. The discovery is expected to deepen scientific understanding of the chemistry that existed long before planets like Earth were formed.
The molecule, known as erythrulose, was detected within the interstellar medium, the enormous region of gas and dust that fills the space between stars. While the sugar itself is also found naturally on Earth, its presence in deep space highlights the remarkable complexity of chemical reactions taking place far beyond our solar system.
Researchers made the discovery by studying a massive cloud of gas located near the centre of the Milky Way. Using powerful radio telescopes in Spain, they collected signals from the cloud and compared them with laboratory measurements. The matching results confirmed the presence of the sugar molecule in gaseous form.

Scientists say sugars play a much bigger role than simply adding sweetness to food. Various sugar molecules are involved in essential biological processes, including storing energy and forming the building blocks of genetic material. Although erythrulose is not considered a direct requirement for life, researchers believe it can transform into compounds that may have contributed to the earliest stages of biological development.
The finding adds to a growing list of complex organic molecules already discovered in space. Over the years, scientists have detected compounds related to DNA, amino acids, and other carbon based molecules, suggesting that the raw materials needed for life may be more common throughout the galaxy than previously believed.
According to researchers, the latest discovery also strengthens the theory that many of life’s essential chemical ingredients may have existed in space before the formation of Earth and the solar system. If these molecules were already widespread across interstellar clouds, they could have been incorporated into newly forming planets billions of years ago.
The research team now plans to search for additional sugar molecules in other regions of the Milky Way to better understand how these compounds evolve over time. Scientists believe similar discoveries could help explain whether the conditions necessary for life exist elsewhere in the universe.
The study has been published in the journal Nature Astronomy, providing fresh evidence that the chemistry of life extends far beyond our own planet and continues to shape scientific exploration of the cosmos.
