Google I/O 2026 Unveils Universal Cart to Transform Online Shopping Experience Across Platforms
New AI powered shopping system connects Search Gemini YouTube and Gmail into one smart cart allowing users to track deals compare prices and manage purchases seamlessly across Google ecosystem

Google is moving toward a major shift in how people shop online by connecting its different services into a unified experience. At Google I/O 2026, the company introduced a new feature called Universal Cart, powered by Gemini AI, which aims to bring Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail into a single smart shopping flow.
The idea behind this system is to remove the need for users to create separate carts on different platforms. Instead, anything a user discovers while browsing Google services can be saved into one shared cart. For example, a product seen in a YouTube video or a discount email in Gmail can be instantly added to the Universal Cart for later checkout. Google has already started rolling out the feature in the United States for Search and Gemini, while YouTube and Gmail integration will follow in the coming updates.
A key highlight of this new system is its AI driven intelligence. Built using Gemini models, the Universal Cart works in the background to monitor product prices, stock availability, and ongoing offers. If a price drops or an item comes back in stock, users will receive real time alerts. It also provides price history and compares deals across different merchants to help users make better decisions.
Google is not limiting this feature to simple cart management. The company says the system will also offer context aware suggestions. For instance, if a user is shopping for gaming PC components, the AI can recommend compatible parts and warn about mismatched configurations, making the buying process more accurate and user friendly.
The new shopping experience is also connected with Google Wallet. This integration allows users to discover better payment methods, loyalty rewards, and discount options during checkout. The goal is to ensure that users not only find products easily but also get the best possible value while completing purchases.
Along with Universal Cart, Google is expanding its Universal Commerce Protocol system, designed to standardize shopping experiences across platforms. The rollout will begin in countries like Canada and Australia in the coming months, followed by the United Kingdom. The system is also expected to integrate with services such as YouTube shopping, food delivery, and hotel bookings.
Google is working with major global retailers including Nike, Walmart, Sephora, Target, Wayfair, and several Shopify merchants to bring this unified commerce ecosystem to life. With Universal Cart and UCP, the company is aiming to reshape online shopping into a more connected, intelligent, and seamless experience for users worldwide.
