Instagram Introduces Instants Feature for Private Photo Sharing with Standalone App Under Testing

Instagram has launched Instants a real time private photo sharing feature for close friends with disappearing images, limited editing, DM integration and a standalone app currently being tested in select regions

Instagram is moving deeper into real time communication with the launch of its new Instants feature, designed for instant photo sharing among close friends and mutual followers. The feature focuses on capturing and sharing unfiltered moments directly from the camera without relying on gallery uploads or heavy editing.

Interestingly, Instants is built around the idea of temporary visual sharing. Once a photo is viewed, it disappears, and it cannot be accessed again after 24 hours. The platform aims to encourage more natural and spontaneous sharing, where users focus on the moment rather than curated content.

The feature is accessed through a small stacked icon inside Instagram Direct Messages. Tapping it opens the camera immediately, allowing users to click and send photos in real time. There is no option to upload images from the gallery, and editing tools are also intentionally removed. Users can only add a caption before sending the image.

On the receiving side, interaction remains simple but engaging. Recipients can react using emojis, reply through direct messages, or even reshare Instants with others. All responses appear within Instagram DMs, keeping the conversation centralized and private.

However, Instagram has also introduced strict limitations to maintain privacy and authenticity. Screenshots and screen recordings are blocked, and once a photo is viewed, it cannot be undone. Users can still undo a send before the recipient opens it. All shared Instants are stored in a private archive for up to one year, allowing users to revisit them later and turn selected moments into Recap Stories.

To give users more control over their experience, Instagram has added a Snooze Mode. By holding the inbox stack and swiping, users can temporarily pause incoming Instants and resume them whenever they want. The platform also ensures that standard safety tools such as block, mute, restrict and report remain active, with all content reviewed under community guidelines.

For younger users, Instants is integrated with Teen Account protections, including parental supervision tools, daily usage limits, sleep mode and notification controls. Sleep Mode automatically silences alerts between 10 pm and 7 am to encourage healthier usage habits.

Alongside the main rollout, Instagram is also testing a standalone Instants app in select countries for both iOS and Android. This version is expected to offer faster camera access and a more focused experience dedicated purely to instant photo sharing. While the feature is now rolling out globally within Instagram, the separate app remains in limited testing for now.
