PM Modi Unveils India’s First Hydrogen Powered Passenger Train in Haryana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first hydrogen powered passenger train in Haryana, showcasing indigenous railway innovation and advancing cleaner, sustainable transportation with zero carbon emissions across the network.

India has entered a new era of eco friendly rail transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen powered passenger train, officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Haryana. The project marks a major achievement in the country’s efforts to adopt cleaner and more sustainable railway technology.

The newly introduced train will operate between Jind and Sonipat, covering an 89 kilometre route in nearly two hours. During its journey, the service will stop at 12 stations, offering passengers an environmentally responsible travel option while improving regional connectivity.

Built entirely with indigenous technology, the train reflects India’s growing expertise in advanced railway engineering. It features a 10 coach design, making it one of the longest hydrogen powered passenger trains currently in operation. Its 3200 horsepower propulsion system also ranks among the most powerful in its category.

Unlike conventional diesel trains, the new service runs on hydrogen fuel cell technology, which generates electricity onboard by converting hydrogen into energy. The only by product released during operation is water vapour, allowing the train to function without producing carbon emissions.

The hydrogen powered system also reduces dependence on fossil fuels while operating with significantly lower noise levels. Since electricity is produced within the train itself, it does not require continuous overhead electric lines, making it a practical and energy efficient solution for selected railway routes.

The inauguration ceremony at Jind Railway Station was attended by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh, and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. School children were also among the first passengers as the train began its inaugural journey.

With the introduction of this service, India joins a select group of nations operating hydrogen powered trains, strengthening its commitment to green mobility and sustainable public transportation.
