Namma Metro Becomes First in India to Successfully Test 5G Network
Bengaluru Namma Metro has become the first metro system in India to test a 5G network under a TRAI pilot project delivering significantly faster internet speeds.

Namma Metro Creates a National First
Bengaluru’s Namma Metro has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first metro rail network in India to successfully test a 5G network. The trial was conducted as part of a pilot project initiated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, marking an important step toward improving digital connectivity in public transport.
High Speed Internet Demonstrated
According to Namma Metro, the 5G trial demonstrated internet speeds far beyond those available on existing 4G networks. The metro operator stated that the technology delivered speeds that were nearly 50 times faster, highlighting the potential of next generation mobile connectivity for commuters and future smart transport services.
Trial Conducted at MG Road Station
The pilot network was installed by Reliance Jio across a 200 metre stretch at the MG Road Metro station in Bengaluru. During the test, the network recorded download speeds of 1.45 Gbps and upload speeds of 65 Mbps, showcasing the capability of 5G technology in a metro environment.
Metro Shares Successful Results
Namma Metro shared the achievement through its official social media platform, confirming the successful completion of the trial. The metro authority said the results demonstrate how advanced wireless technology can enhance passenger connectivity and support future digital infrastructure across the metro network.
A Step Towards Smarter Urban Transport
The successful 5G network trial places Bengaluru at the forefront of digital innovation in public transportation. The project is expected to provide valuable insights into the future deployment of high speed connectivity across metro systems in India while supporting the development of smarter urban mobility solutions.
