Bengaluru Vijayawada Express Highway Set to Cut Travel Time by Four Hours

The upcoming six lane access controlled highway between Bengaluru and Vijayawada is expected to reduce travel distance significantly, improve industrial connectivity, and accelerate economic growth across several Andhra Pradesh districts.

A major infrastructure project connecting Bengaluru and Vijayawada is moving ahead at a rapid pace, promising faster travel and stronger economic opportunities across Andhra Pradesh. The six lane greenfield access controlled highway is being developed as part of the Bengaluru Kadapa Vijayawada Economic Corridor under National Highway 544G.

Once completed, the new corridor is expected to reduce the distance between Bengaluru and Vijayawada by nearly 110 kilometres. Officials estimate that travelers could save between three and four hours compared to the current journey, making transportation of both passengers and goods much more efficient.

The highway will serve as an important link between the Bengaluru Hyderabad route on NH 44 and the Chennai Vijayawada route on NH 16. The corridor will pass through Sri Sathya Sai, YSR Kadapa, Nellore, Prakasam and Bapatla districts, creating a stronger transportation network across the region.

Among all districts, Kadapa is expected to benefit the most from the project. Around 123.5 kilometres of the highway will pass through 12 mandals in the district. According to district officials, construction activities in Kadapa are being carried out under six packages with an estimated investment of Rs 5,377.72 crore.

Project progress has gained momentum after the required forest and wildlife clearances were received by March 2025. Land acquisition work is also nearing completion, removing key hurdles that had slowed development earlier.

The express highway is expected to improve direct connectivity from Bengaluru to major industrial hubs such as Hindupur and Kopparthy. Modern traffic management systems will be introduced along the route, while a distance based toll collection system is also planned. In addition, seven interchanges and four traveler amenity centers are proposed within Kadapa district to improve convenience and road safety for commuters.

The project is being viewed as a significant step toward boosting industrial growth, attracting investments and strengthening connectivity between southern Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
