Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Delhi Visit Takes Political Twist After Congress Meeting Postponed
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay postponed his scheduled meeting with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi during his Delhi visit while continuing discussions with central leaders on key state issues.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s first official visit to Delhi after taking charge has triggered major political interest across the country. While the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader held a series of important meetings with central leaders regarding state development and sensitive regional issues, the sudden postponement of his planned meeting with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi has now become the biggest talking point.
The meeting with Congress leaders was originally scheduled for Thursday morning but was unexpectedly pushed to next week. Sources from alliance parties clarified that the postponement was mainly due to scheduling changes and not because of any political disagreement. Party insiders also stated that the meeting is still expected to happen soon.
Vijay, who became Chief Minister leading Tamil Nadu’s first coalition government in decades, has been actively engaging with national leaders since arriving in Delhi. His coalition government is supported by Congress, CPI, CPI M, VCK and IUML, making coordination with alliance partners politically significant.
During his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vijay reportedly raised several long pending concerns related to Tamil Nadu. One of the major topics discussed was Karnataka’s move towards the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project on the Cauvery river. Vijay expressed concern that the project could violate the final orders of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and directions issued by the Supreme Court, creating anxiety among Tamil Nadu farmers.
The Chief Minister also highlighted issues faced by Tamil fishermen due to repeated arrests by the Sri Lankan Navy. He informed the Prime Minister that several fishermen were currently lodged in Sri Lankan prisons while hundreds of fishing boats had been seized. Vijay requested immediate intervention from the Centre to ensure their release and protect the interests of coastal communities.
Another issue discussed during the Delhi visit was the recent controversy surrounding the Tamil prayer song played during Vijay’s swearing in ceremony. Vijay reportedly submitted a letter explaining Tamil Nadu’s cultural traditions and stressed that the state remains fully committed to constitutional values and national unity while respecting its linguistic heritage.
In a separate meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Vijay submitted a development memorandum seeking financial support for major infrastructure projects in Tamil Nadu. He requested faster approval and funding for metro rail projects, highways, ports, railway expansion and industrial corridors in cities including Coimbatore, Madurai and Erode.
The Delhi visit is now being closely watched as political observers believe Vijay is carefully balancing state interests, alliance politics and national level engagement during the early phase of his tenure as Chief Minister.
