The victim, Hania Ahmed, had traveled from Australia to Pakistan with her family for a vacation. While passing through the Chakwal district of Punjab province, their vehicle was reportedly stopped by an armed gang that took the family hostage. Police rushed to the scene after receiving information about the incident, leading to a confrontation with the suspects.

During the exchange of gunfire, a police officer allegedly mistook the family’s vehicle for that of the criminals and opened fire. Bullets struck Hania, resulting in her death at the scene. The tragic error has drawn widespread attention both in Pakistan and Australia.

The incident occurred on June 10. Hania’s father Adil Ahmed, aged 39, and her eleven year old brother Afan Ahmed suffered serious injuries during the shooting. Her mother, Dr Sidra Khan, survived the ordeal without major injuries. Medical officials later confirmed that the injured father and son are recovering.

Hania was a student at the Australian Islamic College in Perth. Her death has deeply affected members of the local community, who have expressed shock and sadness over the loss of a young life under such circumstances.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese voiced concern over the incident and called for a transparent and thorough investigation. He urged Pakistani authorities to ensure accountability and provide clarity on how the fatal mistake occurred.

Following an internal review, the police officer accused of firing negligently was suspended from duty and taken into custody. Authorities have reportedly registered a murder case against the officer as investigations continue into the tragic shooting.
