Zverev Ends Grand Slam Wait with Memorable French Open Triumph
Alexander Zverev finally captured his first Grand Slam title after a dramatic five set battle against Flavio Cobolli, becoming the first German man since Boris Becker to win a major championship.

Alexander Zverev achieved one of the biggest milestones of his career by winning his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, ending years of disappointment on the sport’s biggest stages. The German star defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in a thrilling men’s singles final on Sunday at Roland Garros.
The championship clash on Court Philippe Chatrier lasted four hours and 16 minutes, with Zverev emerging victorious 6 1, 4 6, 6 4, 6 7 (5 7), 6 1. The victory also made him the first German man since Boris Becker in 1996 to lift a major singles trophy.
For Zverev, the triumph carried special significance. After suffering defeats in his previous three Grand Slam finals, including a painful loss in the 2020 US Open final after leading by two sets, he finally overcame the pressure and delivered when it mattered most.
Cobolli, seeded tenth in the tournament, entered the final hoping to end Italy’s long wait for a French Open men’s singles champion. However, despite a spirited performance, he was unable to stop Zverev from achieving his dream.
The German dominated the opening set as Cobolli struggled to settle into the match. The Italian responded strongly in the second set to level the contest, before Zverev regained control by taking the third set.
The fourth set produced some of the most exciting tennis of the evening. Cobolli held his nerve in a tense tie break to force the match into a deciding fifth set and keep his title hopes alive.
But Zverev quickly seized momentum in the final set by breaking Cobolli’s serve early and racing to a 3 0 lead. From there, he never looked back, closing out the match in commanding fashion to secure the long awaited championship.
As the winning point was confirmed, an emotional Zverev collapsed onto the court in celebration. The victory not only earned him his first Grand Slam trophy but also removed the unwanted label of being one of the best players never to win a major title.
